BMC Speedmachine 01 Custom Build: Shimano 105 Di2 & Princeton Wake 6560 — Built to Fly
Some bikes are built to ride. This one was built to fly. At The Bike Lab, we recently completed one of our most exciting custom builds to date — a BMC Speedmachine 01 dressed in a stunning matte white finish, equipped with Shimano 105 Di2 electronic shifting and Princeton CarbonWorks Wake 6560 wheels. This is a triathlon and time trial machine engineered for speed, precision, and aerodynamic dominance.
The BMC Speedmachine 01: Aero Excellence for Triathlon and TT
The BMC Speedmachine 01 is BMC Switzerland’s flagship triathlon and time trial frameset, designed from the ground up to deliver real-world aerodynamic performance. Unlike bikes tested solely in wind tunnels, BMC engineers the Speedmachine to handle crosswinds, varied terrain, and the unpredictable conditions of race day. The result is a bike that is not only aerodynamically fast but also remarkably stable and confident at speed.
The frame features BMC’s ACE+ (Accelerated Composites Evolution) carbon technology, producing a structure that is both incredibly lightweight and stiff where it matters most — at the bottom bracket for power transfer and in the head tube for precise handling. The integrated design hides cables and hoses internally, contributing to a clean, drag-reducing profile that slices through the air.
Whether you are training for your first triathlon or chasing a podium finish at an Ironman event, the Speedmachine 01 platform offers a race-ready foundation that can be customized to suit your exact needs.
Shimano 105 Di2: Electronic Shifting Precision at Every Level
For this custom build, we chose the Shimano 105 Di2 R7100 series groupset — Shimano’s entry point into electronic shifting and one of the most exciting developments in cycling technology in recent years. The 105 Di2 brings the same wireless electronic shifting technology found in Shimano’s top-tier Dura-Ace and Ultegra groups down to a more accessible price point, without sacrificing performance.
The 12-speed system delivers fast, precise, and consistent shifts under load — exactly what you need when pushing watts on a TT bike. The semi-wireless design keeps the cockpit clean, with a wireless connection between the shifters and derailleurs and only a single internal wire connecting the front and rear derailleurs. Paired with Shimano’s E-TUBE app, riders can customize shift settings, check battery status, and fine-tune their drivetrain from their smartphone.
For a triathlon or time trial setup, the 105 Di2 groupset is a smart choice: it provides professional-level shifting reliability at a price that lets you allocate budget toward other high-performance components — like a premium set of aero wheels.
Princeton CarbonWorks Wake 6560: The Fastest Wheels on the Road
No high-performance aero build is complete without a set of wheels that can back up the frame’s potential, and the Princeton CarbonWorks Wake 6560 wheels are among the most aerodynamically advanced wheelsets available today. With a rim depth that varies between 60mm and 65mm using Princeton’s signature sinusoidal wave profile, these wheels are designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve stability in crosswind conditions — a game-changer for time trialists and triathletes.
The Wake 6560’s unique scalloped rim shape is not just for looks. The wave pattern manipulates airflow across the rim surface, creating lower drag at wider yaw angles and making the wheelset feel more planted and predictable when gusts hit. They are full carbon, tubeless-ready, and incredibly stiff and responsive — qualities that translate directly into watts saved on race day.
Paired with the Speedmachine 01’s aero frame, the Princeton Wake 6560 wheels complete a package that is genuinely built for speed. This is the kind of wheelset that turns heads in the transition area and delivers measurable performance gains on the course.
The Matte White Custom Build: Every Detail Considered
This particular Speedmachine 01 custom build was assembled with intention from top to bottom. The matte white finish gives the bike a clean, modern, and aggressive aesthetic — a look that stands apart from the standard color options and reflects the care that went into selecting every component.
Here at The Bike Lab, custom builds are what we do best. Every bike that leaves our shop is assembled by hand with attention to detail that goes beyond simply bolting parts together. From headset preload and bearing adjustment to derailleur hanger alignment and cable tension, we ensure that each build performs flawlessly from the first pedal stroke.
This Speedmachine build is a perfect example of how a thoughtful component selection — pairing the 105 Di2 groupset with Princeton CarbonWorks Wake 6560 wheels on a world-class aero frame — can deliver a race machine that punches well above its price point. It is aero, it is smart, and it is ready to fly.
